NewsWatch [image] Florida Concealed Carry Permit-Holder Charged With Murder
» by NewsWatch on July 5th, 2008 Permalink

As reported in yesterday’s Miami Herald, concealed carry permit-holder William Garrido (permit #W2220193, according to the police report) was charged with murder in the shooting death of Josue Reyes.

According to the Herald:

A feud between two Miami Beach cabbies ended in violence, with one confessing to shooting and killing the other, police said Friday.

William Garrido, a 55-year-old driver for Central Cab, shot and killed Josue Reyes, 42, following a tense confrontation in the parking lot of the Bass Museum of Art, 2121 Park Ave., according to Miami Beach police.

The shooting happened just before noon, when Garrido and Reyes parked their cars in the lot. The two then got out of the vehicles and approached each other.

That’s when Garrido shot Reyes, police said.

Reyes tried to run away, police said, but Garrido shot him a second time. The shot to the back caused Reyes to stumble and collapse beside a parking meter.

Garrido then jumped into his yellow cab, number 844, and headed north on Park Avenue.

Garrido was arrested and charged with first-degree murder just before midnight Thursday. He was being held without bond.

Previously, Garrido was sentenced to two months in jail and a year of probation after pleading no contest to charges of aggravated assault with a weapon in 1997, public records show.

Garrido had a concealed-weapons permit, according to the report.

How is it possible that Garrido could have a concealed carry permit?

As if we needed more evidence, he is just the latest example of why not everyone who has such a permit is presumptively a “law-abiding gun owner.” For those keeping score at home, this is the second incident in a week of a Florida concealed carry permit-holder with a criminal record involved in a shooting.

It bears repeating that Florida was the most violent state in the country in the 10 years after Florida passed concealed carry, and still remains among the top 4 most violent in America as of 2006.

Perhaps this shouldn’t come as a complete surprise, since the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported last year that there were 10 times as many criminal concealed carry permit-holders than previously admitted by the state, including those “responsible for assaults, burglaries, sexual battery, drug possession, child molestation — even homicide.”

By the way, is this the type of “law-abiding gun owner” the NRA’s Marion Hammer wants to be able to bring their guns to work at Disney World?
